Smart Goat: 1970 Pontiac GTO
Story and Photos: Dan Hankin
What would you expect from a muscle car enthusiast who makes his living creating custom car audio and electronic systems for smart homes? 10 years in the making, this 1970 Pontiac GTO is the creation of electronics specialist Chuck Hamly of Alexandria, Virginia. Even more impressive than the unique details of the car is the fact that Hamly did nearly all of the work on the car himself.

Underneath the cool single stage PPG Aqua paint are fiberglass rear quarters
bonded to the original steel roof, trunk, and doors. A one piece fiberglass
front clip and dzus fastened hood eliminate body seams up front, and the
smooth look is carried back to shaved door handles, locks, and badges.

The super low stance was achieved with H.O. Racing constant rate springs,
which allowed Hamly to cut the springs to his liking without altering their
properties. Rounding out the suspension are H.O. Racing sway bars, Hotchkis
upper control arms in front, and urethane bushings throughout. Baer disc
brakes hang at all four corners with 12.5" rotors out back and 13.25"
rotors turning on Baer spindles up front.

Inside, Hamly is cradled in Flofit bucket seats and serenaded by a 1200
watt entertainment system featuring a Sony stereo and tv tuner, Precision
Power amps, and Boston Acoustics speakers and subs. Electronic functions,
including lights, nitrous and fuel injection programming, and the entertainment
system are controlled via a center console mounted touch screen, originally
intended for home theatre/smart home use. Lift the rear seat and you'll
expose the inner workings of Hamly's Smart Goat.

Continuing the high tech theme, power comes from a fuel injected Pontiac
400. Hamly used SD Performance heads with 101cc combustion chambers to lower
the compression to a forced induction friendly 8:1. The Holley Commander
950 fuel injection is plumbed through a custom intake manifold and is fed
by a Weldon fuel pump and 50 lb. injectors. In the event big block Pontiac
power isn't enough, the goat is equipped with a Procharger and nitrous.
The motor exhales through Hooker headers, modified to move the collectors
up 3" and out of harm's way. Flowmaster big block mufflers and 3"

mandrel bent pipes complete the exhaust. It's all backed by a Turbo 400
transmission with Hurst Quarter Stick shifter, and a 10 bolt Pontiac rear
with Safety Trac. Now that's a smart Goat. But what else would you expect
from Chuck Hamly?
